Thales is enabling Oslo KTP, the public transport operator for the city of Oslo, to launch a secure and multimodal contactless smart card e-ticketing system for its urban transport network. The contactless transport card, Flexus, will be available to Oslo's inhabitants in a wide scale by early 2009.
The project allows Oslo KTP to upgrade the existing paper ticketing system to an up to date e-ticketing system for all modes of public transportation in the Norwegian capital and in the Akershus county surrounding Oslo. The previous range of paper tickets is then going to be replaced by a combination of contactless smart cards, Flexus, and contactless disposable tickets, Impuls.
As part of the contract, Thales has equipped Oslo KTP with a fully integrated e-ticketing system covering over 525 buses, 72 trams, 7 boats and 94 metro stations. Thales deliveries has involved Ticket Vending Machines (TVM), contactless validators, on-board driver consoles, depot systems for buses, tramways and boats, stations central system, back-office, and a new generation of gates for several metro stations in the city centre.
In the Norwegian capital, Thales is also supplying Oslo IO, the transport revenue collection company, with a comprehensive interoperability system designed to complete interconnection of Oslo KTP e-ticketing systems with other operators' e-ticketing systems in the Oslo surrounding areas.
To this end, Thales has delivered and installed in October, a major system upgrade, that allows full interoperability of Oslo KTP's Ticket Vending Machines with a new generation of user-friendly man machine interface.
Thorbjoern Thoresen, Vice President of Oslo KTP, comments: "The Thales fare collection system has met the requirements allowing us to issue secure contactless transport cards to all passengers on their introduction in 2009. The implementation of contactless cards is a major project for us and for the city's inhabitants, and Thales is providing the support we need to make this large-scale development a success."
Jean-Marc Gardin, Managing Director, in charge of Thales's Transportation Systems activities, says: "Together with our current contracts in the Netherlands and in Denmark, this success in Oslo is a proof of Thales's commitment and unmatched expertise in the delivery of complex and fully integrated multi-modal ticketing systems. A strong cooperation with our customers throughout the project combined with our expertise in the deployment of contactless technology have been cornerstones in the successful outcome of this project. Moving forward, we will be supporting both Oslo KTP and Oslo IO with the introduction of the Flexus card on an ongoing basis."
